Cox: Used-car supply rose in June while listings held near $27,000

What Cox observed in dealer listings

Cox Automotive's July 17 analysis of vAuto Live Market View data estimates that combined franchised- and independent-dealer used inventory reached 2.14 million vehicles in June. That was 1% higher than May and 0.2% higher than a year earlier.

Days of supply rose to 47 from a revised 45 in May. Cox calculates that measure using the estimated daily retail sales pace for the most recent month. The company estimates June's retail used-vehicle sales pace fell 1.9% from May and 1.6% from a year earlier, so slower sales contributed to the higher days-of-supply reading.

Listing prices and consumer inflation measure different things

Cox puts the average used-vehicle listing price at $27,027 in June, up 0.4% from a revised May figure and 6% from a year earlier. Cox says a larger share of younger vehicles in the listing mix also helped lift the average. The figure describes dealer asking prices in its dataset, not the price of a completed sale or a specific vehicle's value.

BLS reported that its used-cars-and-trucks consumer price index fell 0.2% from May after seasonal adjustment and 1.8% from a year earlier. The readings are not contradictory: the BLS index tracks price change for consumer transactions, while Cox's report tracks dealer listings, inventory mix, and supply.

What buyers can do with the data

• Compare the same model year, trim, mileage range, condition, and title history in your local market.
• Expect fewer choices at the lower-priced end; Cox measured 33 days of supply below $15,000 versus 47 days overall.
• Ask for the out-the-door price and keep optional products separate.
• Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing.

What sellers can do with the data

Use the national report as context, not as an appraisal. Recent local comparables, mileage, condition, title history, maintenance records, and needed repairs are more relevant to a specific asking price. A slightly larger national supply does not guarantee the same change for every model or region.
