A shift visible in completed transactions

J.D. Power reported that premium vehicles, excluding direct-to-consumer brands, represented 13.3% of U.S. new-vehicle sales in the first half of 2026, down from 13.8% a year earlier. The report draws on J.D. Power intelligence and proprietary market data, its 2026 APEAL Study, PIN+ Demographics, and TransUnion TruAudience Consumer Insights.

Among consumers trading a midsize premium SUV, 32% bought from a mainstream brand. Mainstream midsize SUVs accounted for 11% of those transactions and compact SUVs for 6%. Among compact premium-SUV owners, 30% moved to a mainstream brand. These are observed first-half transaction patterns, not advertised offers, applications, or a future-sales forecast.

The compared purchases carried a sizable price gap

For consumers who moved from a midsize premium SUV to a mainstream midsize SUV, J.D. Power reported an average customer-facing transaction price of $51,500 for the purchased mainstream vehicle, compared with $70,600 for the premium segment traded.

The report also said the satisfaction gap between premium and mass-market brands in its APEAL Study narrowed to 29 points on a 1,000-point scale in 2026 from 66 points in 2008. Satisfaction scores measure owner experience; they do not prove that two vehicles have the same equipment, reliability, warranty, resale value, or ownership cost.

Premium supply and incentives were higher

J.D. Power estimated about 67 days of premium-brand supply in July, compared with roughly 56 days for mainstream brands. Premium incentives were near 7.3% of MSRP, versus about 6% for mainstream vehicles.

Broader supply or incentive averages can help frame negotiations, but they do not guarantee a discount on a particular model. Availability and programs can vary by brand, region, trim, lender, and delivery date.

A practical way to compare across badges

  • List the features and ownership benefits you actually use, then price comparable mainstream and premium trims side by side.
  • Compare insurance, maintenance, warranty coverage, fuel or electricity, expected depreciation, and financing—not only the purchase price.
  • Test the interface, driver-assistance features, visibility, comfort, and cargo space rather than assuming similar equipment works the same way.
  • For a trade-in, compare the payoff amount and multiple written offers before applying equity to the next purchase.
