Fairfax County Parkway traffic shift begins July 22

What is changing
VDOT plans to shift the southbound lanes of Fairfax County Parkway toward the median between Burke Centre Parkway and Route 123. The long-term layout gives crews room to work on a sound wall as part of the parkway widening project.
The shift is scheduled for Wednesday, July 22, if weather allows. VDOT listed daytime lane closures from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on July 20, 21, and 22 to put the new pattern in place.
What drivers should do
- Slow down before the new lane pattern and leave more space between vehicles.
- Watch for signs, barriers, crews, and large equipment entering or leaving the work area.
- Check current traffic and work-zone updates before the trip because weather can change the schedule.
Why the work is happening
The larger project is widening about two miles of Fairfax County Parkway, adding road and intersection improvements, building a shared-use path, and improving bicycle and pedestrian crossings. VDOT says the project is scheduled for completion in mid-2027.
